• Isolationist A person or country that wants to
  stay out of the political affairs of other
  countries.
• Protectorate A country that is partly controlled
  and protected by a more powerful country.
• Annex To add or take possession of a smaller
  country.

Different Ideas in US

• Not all Americans agreed about expansion
• Some thought it was wrong to take control of
  other countries
• Some were isolationists
• Didnt want to be pulled into a war

• A lot of Americans wanted to expand
• Wanted to take American way of life to others
• Wanted to increase its economic strength
• Farms were growing more than US could eat
• Factories making more products than US could use
• Needed to sell more goods to foreign countries

Trade with Japan

• 1853 Commodore William Perry led US warships to
  Japan
• Convinced Japanese emperor to open trade with US
• Japan began to build factories like the west
• Began building up their navy
• Needed US steel and oil
• US bought cloth and other products from Japan
• Other Asian countries began to trade with US
• Asia countries were thousands of miles form the
  US
• Opened a port in the Hawaiian Islands called
  Pearl Harbor

• 1800s Hawaii was a free nation
• King of Hawaii let US use Pearl Harbor
• American Planters in Hawaii wanted to control the
  govt. of Hawaii
• 1891 the queen took rule
• Did not like Americans having so much power over
  the islands
• Did not agree with the use of Pearl Harbor

• American planters and traders in Hawaii feared
  they were going to lose a lot of money.

• Americans revolted against the queen
• Marines joined in
• Planters won
• Asked US to make Hawaii a US protectorate
• 1898 US annexed Hawaii

Relations with China

• Wanted Chinese rulers to make an open door policy
• Meant all countries should be free to trade with
  China
• Many Chinese people didnt like foreign countries
  making decisions for China
• 1900 Organization (Boxers) tried to get rid of
  foreigners during the Boxer Rebellion
• US and other countries used force to end
  rebellion
• US started to play a more forceful role in the
  world

• 1880-early 1900s
• US began to enlarge its navy
• Increase foreign trade
• Needed protection
• 1907 Pres. Roosevelt
• Wanted to show the world US was a great power
• Sent 16 battleships called The Great White
  Fleet on a world tour
