  • Protectorate A country that is partly controlled
    and protected by a more powerful country.

  • Not all Americans agreed about expansion
  • Some thought it was wrong to take control of
    other countries
  • Some were isolationists
  • Didnt want to be pulled into a war

  • US bought cloth and other products from Japan

  • Asia countries were thousands of miles form the
    US
  • Opened a port in the Hawaiian Islands called
    Pearl Harbor

  • King of Hawaii let US use Pearl Harbor
  • American Planters in Hawaii wanted to control the
    govt. of Hawaii
  • 1891 the queen took rule
  • Did not like Americans having so much power over

    rebellion
  • US started to play a more forceful role in the
    world
