310. Internationales Caritas Friedenslager
10th International Caritas Peace Camp
From July 14 to August 4, 2010, in
Alexandria/Egypt

4 Since 1999 Caritas Austria has been organising
an International Peace Camp (almost) every year
for needy children from different countries of
the Middle East. These camps are organised in
close collaboration with local partners in the
region and take place in another country each
year. The aims of these camps are ?to
contribute to the understanding among peoples ?
to eliminate preconceived ideas ? to strengthen
mutual respect and tolerance ? to arouse interest
in different religions and cultures ? and to
enable socially deprived children to benefit
from real vacations
5This year 98 children aged between 10 and 14 from
eight Arabic countries were participating, namely
Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt,
Sudan and Yemen. These children belonged to 10
different religious denominations.All of them
live in poverty and are marginalised due to their
situation as orphans or refugees, because they
live in a slum near Cairo or because they are
street children.30 team counsellors from 10
different countries, among them Sisters from four
different congregations, took care of the
children at the camp.
6The participants of the peace camp were
hospitably welcomed at the Tito convent of the
Daughters of Charity in Alexandria
7During the camp the 98 children from eight
nations were split in 10 groups

opened its gates for the peace camp participants

sea for the first time in their lives

friendships was definitely achieved
50It is hard to say good bye after three weeks
together and a lot of tears are being shed on the
last evening
