2W.C. Bonner ji, at the first meeting of the India
National Congress in 1885.
- It is under the civilizing rule of the Queenof
England that we meet herestopped by none, and
are freely allowed to speak our minds withiout
the least fear such a thing is possible
underBritish rule onlyWere it not for tehese
blessings of British rule, I would not have come
here today. I cam without the leastfear that my
children might be robbed and killed in my
absence. You were able within a few days, to
travel here from every corner of the land. In
earlier days the trip would have taken you
months. - There remains even greater blessings for which we
have to be grateful. It is to the British that we
owe the education we possess. The people of
England were sincere when they said more than
half a century ago that India was a sacred charge
given to them by God. The English were telling
the truth when they declared that they were bound
to rule India for her own good, for the glory of
their own name, and for the satisfication of God.

- One fact is that this allen (British) government
has ruined our contry. In the beginning, all of
us were taken by surprise. We thought that
eveWith rything that the rulers did was for our
good. We thought that the English government had
come down from the clouds to save us from foreign
and internal warfareWe felt happy for a time,
but it soon came to light that the peace which
was established in this countryprevented us from
going at each others throats, so that a
foreigner might go at the throat of us all - We believed in the good intentions of the
goernment, but in politics there are no godo
intentions. We were fooled. Hidden under the
seeminlglygood intentions of the Egnlish was
strong self-interest. - Soon a change came over us. English eduation,
grrowing poverty, and better knowledge of our
rulers opened our eyes. It became clear to us
that the dream of money from our country was
ruining us.

6A British scholar describes British rule in India.
- British rule brought with it from the West
certain standards of humanity that Indian society
had not yet reached. Early action was taken to
stop female infanticide (the killing of girl
babies). The gangs of Thugs, who strangled
harmless travelers in the service of the goddess
Kali (Hindu goddess of death), were broken up.
Human sacrifice, which was still being carried on
in some primitive hill districts, was stamped
out. The slave trade was ended and the owning of
slaves was forbidden. - One result of the new order was a steady rise in
the value of Indias export trade. In 1834, it
had been under 8 million (English) pounds (about
38 million). IN 1928, it was 190 million.

provided markets for Englands industrial goods.

unemployment grew poverty of India.
