William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 – 1905) was a French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings, he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body. During his life, he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors. Bouguereau fell into disrepute after 1920, due in part to changing tastes. Prices for Bouguereau's works have climbed steadily since 1975, with major paintings selling at high prices: $1.5 million in 1998 for The Heart's Awakening, $2.6 million in 1999 for The Motherland and Charity at auction in May 2000 for $3.5 million. Bouguereau's works are in many public collections

Elisabeth Sonrel (1874 – 1953) was a French painter and illustrator in the Art Nouveau style. Her works included allegorical subjects, mysticism and symbolism, portraits and landscapes. She was the daughter of Nicolas Stéphane Sonrel, a painter from Tours, and received her early training from him. For further study she went on to Paris as a student of Jules Lefebvre at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. She exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1893 and 1941, her signature pieces being large watercolors in a Pre-Raphaelite manner. Her paintings were often inspired by Arthurian romance, Dante Alighieri's 'Divine Comedy' and 'La Vita Nuova', biblical themes, and medieval legends. At the Exposition Universelle of 1900, her painting was awarded a bronze medal, and the Henri Lehmann prize of 3000 francs by L‘Académie des Beaux-Arts.

The Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta) is a former royal residence in Caserta, southern Italy, constructed for the Bourbon kings of Naples. It is one of the largest palaces erected in Europe during the 18th century. In 1997, the palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; its nomination described it as "the swan song of the spectacular art of the Baroque, from which it adopted all the features needed to create the illusions of multidirectional space". Imagined by Luigi Vanvitelli as a spectacular completion of the Reggia, the garden extends over 120 hectares of gently sloping land towards the Briano hill. Although the design was resized, it remains an extraordinary example of landscape design, enriched by pleasant places, fountains and water games

The exhibition held in Pavia brings together a select and unique series of paintings and drawings by Renoir, some of which have never been exhibited in Italy, featuring works from galleries around the world, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, Columbus Museum of Art (Ohio) and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. It is one of the largest palaces erected in Europe during the 18th century. In 1997, the palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; The construction of the palace was begun in 1752 for Charles VII of Naples, who worked closely with his architect, Luigi Vanvitelli. The political and social model for Vanvitelli's palace was Versailles. One of the king's primary objects was to have a magnificent new royal court and administrative center for the kingdom in a location protected from sea attack, and distant from the revolt-prone and congested city of Naples. To provide the king with suitable protection, troop barracks were housed within the palace.
