1
Why the Industrial Revolution Started in England
2
GOVERNMENT
  • The Government of Britain in the 1700s helped
    industrialism grow.
  • The Parliament ensured that roads and canals were
built, maintained, and protected, and it issued
    patents to protect inventors work.
  • It built a strong navy to protect its empire and
    oversea trade.
  • The government lowered taxes on profits, and
businesses became freer to do as they wished.

3
Natural Resources
  • Coal
  • Iron
  • Rivers
  • Wool
  • Cotton

4
Capital
  • Britain had business people who had the capital-
money, goods, or property, and used it to
advantage in their businesses. In addition
Britain had a well developed banking system that
granted loans at low interest rates.

5
RELIGIOUS ATTITUDES
  • Religious attitudes also played a role. Many
businessmen came from religious groups built on
    thrift and hard work.
  • At the same time, many people focused more on
worldly concerns than on the afterlife.
  • Thus risk takers such as inventors and bankers
felt free to devote their time and energies to
    becoming wealthy.

6
LABOR FORCE
  • Britain had a large Labor Force. In the
    1700s new farming techniques significantly
    increased the countrys food supply.

7
Skilled Mechanics
  • The British led the world in inventing
machines and in training people to use them. As a
result, Britain had many SKILLED MECHANICS who
were eager to meet the growing demand for new,
    practical inventions.
