• Jefferson takes office in 1801 and asks to be

• John Marshall Chief Justice of the Supreme
  Court from 1801 - 1835. Helped build the prestige
  and authority of the Supreme Court.

• Marbury v. Madison Headed by Justice Marshall.
  The Supreme Court ruled that part of an act of
  congress called the Judiciary Act of 1789 was
  unconstitutional.

• Napoleon has a terrible defeat on island
  Hispaniola (Haiti) and feels he has no more need
  for New Orleans.

• Jefferson sends Monroe and Livingston to Paris to
  make a deal with Napoleon to acquire New Orleans
  due to Mississippi River trading.

• Surprisingly because of cash issues Napoleon
  offers the whole Louisiana Territory for 15
  Million!!

• Because of illegal boarding of U.S. ships

  France.
• This hurt us more then them, and the American
  economy suffers.
