  • In 1791 slaves began more and more uprisings
based on their fear that their already terrible
    living conditions would get worse.
  • Within TEN DAYS on the main island of Haiti
whites only controlled a few small camps and
within the next two months uprising slaves killed
2,000 white slaves and destroyed 280 sugar
    plantations

7
The Middle
  • The slaves at first planned to overthrow the
white rule, but stay under French rule
  • When the French made it clear that they were
going to re-establish slavery after the
uprisings, the rebellions began to be aimed at
overthrowing the French as well as the white
    slave owners

8
The End
  • January 1, 1804 Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the new
leader of Haiti until they could draft a
constitution, declared Haiti a free republic
  • The Haitian revolution is known as the only
    successful slave rebellion in history

9
Major Players
  • Toussaint L'Ouverture self educated former
slave who led the uprisings and is still
    considered a hero
  • Jean-Jacques Dessalines leader of the uprisings
who was named interim president until the
    constitution was drafted

10
Impacts
  • Haiti was a major revenue for Napoleons French
empire and the loss of this colony was a major
blow for him and he began to unload many more of
his territories in the area such as Louisiana

in New Orleans, having a large impact on that
    areas heritage

brothers Fidel and Raul Castro were captured
