become more cosmopolitan but it still had a small
town look to it.

wealth and cultural influences (especially from

that the city was an embarrassment. It did not
match the Empire that it controlled. Caesar
sought to change that.

20Julius Caesar also wanted to change to course of
the Tiber to enlarge the Campus Martius. JC,
basically, wanted to change the city of Rome
completely. However, he was murdered and his
heir Augustus was the one who assumed this role.
21Augustus boasted that he found Rome a city of
bricks and left it a city of marble. Indeed,
Augustus a subsequent emperors adorned the city
with some of its most famous buildings.
