Title: Bell Ringer

1
Bell Ringer
  • Think of an animal behavior. Then record whether
this is an innate or learned behavior.
  • Innate means that the animal was born with the
    behavior
  • Learnedwell thats a behavior that the animal
    learned

2
Chapter 34
  • Animal Behavior

3
Chapter 34
4
Ethology
  • the branch of zoology that studies that
emphasizes on animal behavior in their natural
    habitats
  • zoology study of animals

5
Stimulus and Response
  • Stimulus any signal that can be detected
  • Light, sound, odors, change in weather, seeing a
    predator, etc.
  • Response reaction to a stimulus
  • Whitetail deer, Odocoileus virginianus,
seeing/smelling danger and running with tail up
to alert other deer of danger

6
Innate Behavior
  • A behavior an animal is born with doesnt have
    to be taught
  • An innate behavior of the Automeris moth below is
to flash its spotted wings, so that it looks like
a more dangerous owl to scare possible predators

7
Learned Behavior
  • 4 Different Ways that Animals Learn
  • 1. Habituation animal decreases response to
stimulus that neither rewards nor harms the
    animal

8
Learned Behavior
  • 2. Classical Conditioning
  • Animal makes connection between stimulus and some
    kind of reward or punishment
  • Examples
  • Ringing bell every time a dog eats eventually
dog learns that the bell means that it will get
food will begin salivating when bell is rang
even if no food is present.
  • Tapping on fish tank before feeding them they
eventually learn that the tapping means that they
    will get food.

9
Learned Behavior
  • 3. Operant Conditioning
  • Animal performs random act and is rewarded or
punished animal will repeat act for reward or
not repeat act that was punished for.
  • Example Teaching police dogs to respond by
barking when smells drugs, bombs, dead bodies,
etc. (dog is rewarded in learning process so that
he will repeat the act of barking each time he
    smells the object)

10
Learned Behavior
  • 4. Insight Learning aka reasoning, logic, or
    problem-solving
  • Using concepts previously learned to solve new
    problem
  • Example students memorizing facts and then
applying those facts to solve new problems. For
example, learning how to calculate percentages in
math class and then realizing him/herself to use
that knowledge to calculate a 15 tip to leave
for a waitress when at a restaurant.

11
Lets Go Outside
  • Go to the wooded lot next to school and find a
place to sit to observe a wild animal and record
its actions for about 5 minutes.
  • Look for birds, squirrels, and insects under logs
    and rocks, etc.
  • After recording behaviors, record whether each is
    an innate or learned response.
  • When log is disturbed, how do insects respond?
    Innate or learned behavior?
  • Remember, you cant talk or make noise or animals
will run/fly away. Remember, even this is a
    behavior.
