Is a Muslim the same as an Islamic?

• Islam means submission to the will of Allah
• Muslim means one who has submitted

Beginning

• Arabs began to settle in market towns
• The city of Mecca became an important stop
• In the city was a simple house of worship called
  the Kaaba
• Kaaba was associated with Abraham

Muhammad

• Was born into a powerful Meccan family
• Raised by his grandfather and uncle
• Became involved with businesses and a trader
• Late in life he became interested in religion

Muhammad

• While meditating in a cave outside Mecca, the
  angel Gabriel spoke to him
• He thought that the Lord who spoke to him was
  Allah
• Allah in Arabic is the concept of belief in one
  God
• Thus the creation of the religion of Islam

Hijrah

• Muhammad left Mecca in order to avoid hostility
• They traveled to Yathrib, this became known as
  the Hijrah (hih-JeE-ruh)
• Yathrib was later named Medina, meaning city of
  prophet

Return to Mecca

• After many years of settlement in Medina,
  Muhammad and 10,000 followers marched to Mecca
• Mecca leaders surrendered
• Muhammad went to the Kaaba and destroyed any
  false god idols and declared all to pray to Allah

Beliefs of Religion

• Individuals responsible for their actions
• Muslims believe they will stand before Allah on
  judgment day and enter heaven or hell
• Quran is the Islamic holy book

Five Pillars

• Faith
• Prayer
• Alms
• Fasting
• Pilgrimage

Way of Life

• Followers are not allowed to eat pork or to drink
  wine or other intoxicating beverages
• Only Arabic may be used in worship
• Prayer happens 5 times a day, facing Mecca
