  • Learn about tactics used by the Ku Klux Klan to
    spread terror throughout the South.
  • Find out why Reconstruction ended.
  • Review the major successes and failures of
    Reconstruction.

A) Setting the Scene
  • 1866 KKK started
  • Choose Nathan Bedford Forrest to be the first
    grand wizard
  • In 1868 murdered 300 people in Arkansas and 1,000
    in Louisiana
  • ½ of the adult male population of New Orleans
    were Klan members

B) Spreading Terror
  • Klan intimidated Republican voters
  • Goal was to keep blacks as submissive laborers
  • Burning crosses lynching
  • Enforcement Act of 1870 banned the use of
    terror, force, or bribery to prevent people from
    voting because of their race
  • Military went after them within a year the KKK
    is virtually wiped out (Sheridan)

C) Reconstruction Ends
  • Four main reasons why Reconstruction ended
  • Corruption symbol of Reconstuction
  • The economy Southern debt increased, economic
    downturn in 1873
  • Violence Southerners used violence on freedmen
    when soldiers left
  • Democrats return to power ex-Confederates become
    powerful Democrats
  • Solid South Democrat voting bloc in the South
    reversed many laws of the Republicans
  • Supreme Court gave power back to the states
    limiting the Civil War Amendments
  • 18) Compromise of 1877 Democrats would allow
    Hayes to be President if he removed troops from
    the South and ended Reconstruction
