Title: Respiratory System
1Respiratory System
2What is Respiration?
Cellular respiration which takes place in the
mitochondria, is the release of energy from the
breakdown of food molecules in the presence of
oxygen. This is how your cells produce ATP
(cellular energy).
External respiration (breathing) is the the job
of the Respiratory System. The basic function
performed by the human respiratory system is
remarkably simple- to bring about the exchange of
oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood, the
air, and tissues.

4Gas Exchange
Takes place in the Alveoli. Oxygen dissolves in
the moisture on the inner surface and diffuses
across the thin walled capillaries into the
blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses in the opposite
direction.
5How Breathing is controlled
The medulla oblongata has control of breathing.
Cells in the breathing center monitor the amount
of carbon dioxide in the blood. The higher the
level of carbon dioxide, the stronger the urge to
breathe becomes.
