- An EndNote Library is a collection of references
that you have built by downloading references or
by inputting references into the library. - These references are what build your bibliography
in your manuscripts. - You may have one library per manuscript or one
library per doctor.

Save As Name the Library. I call Dr. Hesss
Library Hess.enl If you have the W drive,
save it under
W//EndNote/uniquename/filename.enl

Linking to PDFs
To Insert a URL, the easiest way is to simply
copy/paste the URL right into EndNote.
This enables you to go directly to the manuscript
on-line.

- The PDF must be downloaded to your computer.
Hint Save the manuscript to your computer when
you insert the URL.
- In EndNote, go to ReferencesgtPDFgtLink to PDF

wish to link. Click Open

- Go to ToolsgtConnect
- The first time you do this, you will then select
Connect again. - After that, the PubMed option will also appear
and you can select PubMed directly.

Scroll through the options to find PubMed Click
on Connect

Complete the search fields with as much detail as
you can. Click on Search

search. If this number is too high, Cancel and
search with more specific criteria. Click on
OK to see the results

lists the abbreviated Journal Title. If not, add

download file called Ovidweb-.cgi - Right click on the file
- Open
- Select the Library you want it to export into
(e.g. Hess.enl) - Open
- The file will be added to your EndNote Library
- Check your citations to be sure the Alternate
Journal lists the abbreviated form of the journal
title. If not, add it.

Right click on the ovidweb file (left box), then
click Open. Select the library into which you
wish to save the file (right box), then click
Open.

40Inserting Citations
- Open your Word document.
- Place the cursor where you want the citation
inserted. - Select ToolsgtEndNotegtGo to EndNote
- Set up your screen so you can see both your
document and EndNote simultaneously.

- Search for the correct reference in EndNote
- PC Click on Referencesgt Search References
- Mac Click on the Search References Icon.
- Enter the information desired I generally input
first authors last name and year. - Click Search

- Select the reference you want.
- Click the Insert Citation icon.
- The citation will appear in your manuscript,
either in draft or final format, depending on
options selected in the Format Bibliography
process.

and the reference will be added to your
bibliography at the end of your document.

- You can format your Bibliography and Citations to
appear in any format required. - EndNote has an extensive list of journal formats
set up for you. You may also custom format the
Bibliography to match the specifications of your
publication.

- In your Microsoft Word document, go to
- ToolsgtEndNotegt
- Format Bibliography

- Select the Output Style
- Click on Browse, then scroll to find the journal
name to which you are submitting. - Click on OK

- Select your Font style size
- Input the title of the Bibliography, if you need
one - Generally, the other options are not changed.

- Click on Instant Formatting.
- For small documents, this is great! Click on
Enable. You can see how the final document will
appear as you go. - For large documents this is SLOW! Disable it!
Format the Bibliography at the end. - Click on OK once you are done.

- About this Style
- Based on input the name of the journal/book to
which you are submitting this manuscript - Category input an appropriate category name
(i.e. MedicineGenetics) - Information input information about this style
that will help you identify it in the future.

- Page Numbers select how you want the page
numbers listed in the Bibliography.

- Journal Name Select how you want the journal
names to appear in the Bibliography.

- Citations Click Insert Field, then select the
appropriate field. - Be sure to put the brackets on each side of the
field! - Most common are
- Bibliographic number 1 or
- Author, Year
- Hess, JL, 2004
- Use a comma separator for Bibliographic number
style. - Use a semi-colon for the Author-Year style.

- Select Reference Type (Journal Article, most
common) - Bibliography Template Input the information how
you want the Bibliography to appear. You need to
be VERY careful about spaces, punctuation, bolded
text, etc. Select fields from Insert Field.

- Author Lists Dont change the Author
Separators. - Abbreviated Author Lists Select the option that
is right for what you need. If you want to list
only the first author, input 1 in the blank or
more, list 1st with blank (et.al). If you want
the list truncated with 3 authors, input 3. If
you want all authors listed, select that option.

- Author Names
- Select the format in
- which you want the
- names to appear.

- Layout
- Start with
- Bibliographic , if you have a numbered citation
style - Author, if you have an Author, Year citation
style. - End
- Leave blank unless you need a blank line between
references. If you need a blank line, select the
paragraph symbol. - Hanging Indent
- To indent all the lines to line up distinct from
the numbers, select all paragraphs. - To have all the lines even with the left margin,
select None.

- Sort Order
- Select the order in which you want the references
to appear in the Bibliography. - For numbered style, select order of appearance.
- For Author/Year, usually take the 3rd option.

- Title Capitalization
- Select the style in which the titles should
appear in the Bibliography.

- Close by clicking on the X in the upper right
corner - Save the style.
