2Background
- March 2006
- UCD Library launched a pilot training programme
in the use of EndNote - School of Psychology
- School of Nursing, Midwifery Health Systems
3What is EndNote?
- Software application users to manages
bibliographic references. - References can be entered manually or downloaded.
- Contains cite while you write feature allowing
users to automatically insert citations and build
their bibliography
4Why the Library EndNote?
- Bibliographic management tool
- Ability to manipulate and use information for a
purpose is part of Information Literacy. - Used in conjunction with Library Resources
online databases. - EndNotes attractiveness to academics provides
opportunity to raise the Librarys profile - Demonstrate teaching skills to academics (rather
than students). - Librarys role to support research within UCD
5Aims of the Pilot
- To deliver beginners session in order to meet the
research needs of UCD staff students - To obtain feedback from participants in order to
adjust/improve the workshop - To create a support service for users of EndNote
- To review the process and propose recommendations
for the future to Library senior management
6Objectives of training sessions
- Know what EndNote is
- Understand the capabilities/limitations of
EndNote - Be able to create and manage EndNote libraries
- Manipulate data within EndNote
- Insert images and objects into references or as
individual records within EndNote - Download references from online databases and
catalogues and import them into EndNote - Use EndNote to insert citations and images into
Word documents - Use EndNote to create bibliographies in Word
documents
7Challenges of the training sessions
- EndNote was only available via UCD network
- Users had to be logged into a valid UCD account
- A the time UCD licence allowed only 20
simultaneous users - Version of EndNote v8 unreliable
- Reflected negatively on teaching compromised
learning outcomes - Initial supply did not meet demand from pilot
Schools
8Challenges of the training sessions
9Recommendations from the Pilot
- 1. Feedback
- Reduce to 1 hour session
- Offer follow on support via email
- 2. Extending Expertise
- To meet demand a range of staff needed to become
proficient in use of EndNote - Training the Trainers support staff
10Recommendations from the Pilot
- 3. Future delivery of training
- Lunchtime Sessions, Booking Classes Online,
Development of WebPages, Developing an Online
tutorial, Training Sessions in Schools, Advanced
Training Sessions - 4. Further collaboration between IT Services and
Library - Ensure upgrade to new versions
- Increase number of simultaneous users
- Explore off-campus access
-
11After the Pilot
- Develop WebPages FAQ section
- Write new training manual
- Appoint and train EndNote co-ordinator
- Run generic beginners and advanced lunchtime
sessions (1pm-2pm) - Some Liaison Librarians deliver subject specific
sessions - Developing new clinic for research clusters
12After the Pilot
- Most products the Library offers training for is
purchased and managed by the Library - EndNote is purchased and managed centrally by IT
Services - Opportunity for the Library IT team to work
closely with IT Services - Tease out support arrangements.
- Academics using EndNote more widely for research
- Now a demand for EndNote training at postgraduate
and undergraduate levels. - This increase in users led to increasing demand
for off campus access.
13Application Access
- Background
- Increased demand for Endnote
- Academic staff survey 2007 Easier Application
Access 2nd most important survey - ECAR Student survey 2007 70 of students have
laptops - Student mobility 13,500 unique wireless devices
per month on UCD network
14Application Access
- Easier Application access
- Site license for Endnote for staff and students
on UCD owner devices on UCD network - Licensed for latest version V10
- Accessible from
- 1400 lab PCs via NAL
- Connect Portal as a download for staff on campus
- Laptops through Portal using Citrix for both
staff and students on and off campus
15Application Access
- Application Delivery Pilot
- Application delivery to mobile devices for both
staff and students - for access outside of
classroom - Support Windows and non-windows clients
- Browser based SSO access through Portal
- Application Packaging Softgrid
- Application Delivery/Streaming - Citrix
- Pilot applications Endnote, Autocad, Matlab,
ArcGIS and SPSS - Pilot group of 10 staff and 400 students
16Application Access
- Application Delivery Live next steps
- Make available to full staff and student
population for access outside the class - Introduce new applications to service on a phased
basis eventually making full application suite
available - Pilot in Labs running Softgrid sequences locally
and transition from NAL to this solution if
successful - Pilot on Staff and Student windows devices
running Softgrid sequences locally (Sofgrid v4.5
support non AD devices)
17- In conclusion The opportunity for
collaboration has led to success
