Fungi (Singular Fungus)
3
Kingdom Fungi
  • Includes mushrooms, moulds and yeasts
  • They do not have stems, roots or leaves
  • They are made up of many thin threads called
    hyphae (long filament-like, or thread-like,
strands of cells). Enzymes are secreted by the
hyphae to digest food. The digested food
particles are then absorbed through the surface
    of the hyphae

5
Absorption of Nutrients
6
Kingdom Fungi
  • They have a cell wall, a nucleus and other
    organelles
  • They do not have chlorophyll so they cannot make
    their own food by photosynthesis
  • Some feed on dead organisms or non-living organic
    matters (saprophytic)
  • Some are parasites in plants and animals, and
cause diseases, e.g. athletes foot in human
    (parasitic)

7
Kingdom Fungi
  • Fungi reproduce by spore formation
  • Spores are extremely tolerant to unfavorable
conditions and can be carried by wind to far
    away places
  • When spores land on a suitable medium under
suitable conditions, they can geminate into new
    fungus-forming hyphae

8
Mushrooms
  • Usually found on dead organic matters

9
Moulds
  • Commonly found on stale bread, cheese or fruits

10
Yeasts
  • Unicellular fungi that are commonly found
where sugars are present, such as fruits and
    flowers
