Title: ATP

1
ATP
  • The Cells Energy Storing Molecule

2
Energy is stored in the chemical bonds of food
  • Food molecules cannot deliver energy directly to
    cells.
  • The energy stored in chemical bonds must first be
transferred to a molecule capable of providing
    energy when it is needed.

3
ATP is the energy-storing molecule.
  • ATP stands for Adenosine Triphosphate
  • ATPs function is to trap the energy released by
burning food and STORE it. It can then RELEASE
it in controlled amounts, as the cell needs it.

4
Structure of ATP
  • 1 nitrogen base adenine
  • 1 five-carbon sugar ribose
  • 3 phosphate groups triphosphate

5
HOW IS ATP MADE?
  • A phosphate group is added to ADP (adenosine
    Diphosphate).
  • ADP is just like ATP except it only has 2
phosphate groups (thats why its called di)
  • THIS PROCESS STORES ENERGY

6
HOW IS ATP MADE? continued
  • The triphosphate tail of ATP is unstable and the
bonds between the phosphate groups can be broken
    easily by adding water.
  • WHEN ATP IS BROKEN DOWN INTO ADP ENERGY IS
    RELEASED!
